Adam Hain And 2nd Wife Ann Forsha Hain

These individuals were married a long time, but this was Adam Hain's second marriage - see the reference material below from five US Census records - 1840 to 1880 - and other sources.

This couple was married over 25 years, and Census records show they lived most of their life together in Pleasant Twp., just outside of Marion, OH - the county seat of Marion Co., OH. Adam Hain was born in PA about 1814 and Ann Hain in VA about 1815 and had a first marriage at least by 1838: his oldest son Samuel was born in OH about 1838, and he had a second son, Eli A. and a daughter Martha A. with his first wife. But sometime after his first wife's death in 1850 and the 1860 Census he remarried to the woman pictured in this CDV, and together they had a daughter Mary E. Though they didn't marry until middle age, they nonetheless had a long life together, both appearing in the 1880s Census.

Adam Hain was a farmer, who seemed to do very well for himself and his family, based on the statement of his assets in the US Census.

PIC_236-Henry&Susannah-Hain

Henry Hain (1812-1894)
[Notary Public and Marian Co. Recorder, Auditor, Infirmary Directory, and Justice of the Peace]
And wife Susannah (Susan) Barnhart Hain (c. 1824-1872)

Considerable information about Henry Hain is available in a standard history of Marion Co. - see below.

These individuals were a long married couple - at least 30 years and likely longer. They never had any children. Henry Held several elected offices for Marion County, including county recorder and county auditor.

Henry Hain was born in PA about 1812 and came to Marion Co., OH as a youth. His OH-born wife Susannah (Susan) was about 10 years younger than he. This was Henry Hain's second marriage. His first one had ended tragically with the death of his wife and two young children (see below). Census records show the following:

In 1840 Henry Hain was shown living in Pleasant Twp. not far from Marion, the County seat of Marion Co., head of a household of 5 individuals.

In 1850 he was living in Marion proper, age 37 and working as a "clerk." His wife Susannah was 26.

In 1860 he and Susannah were 10 years older, and his occupation was listed as "merchant." Apparently he did well enough for himself that the could afford to have a live-in domestic servant, Elizabeth Doxwell, age 32.

In 1870 Henry and Susannah were living in Prospect, Marion Co. An 87-year-old retired farmer Samuel Landron was also living in the household with them.

In 1880 Henry was a widowed "retired merchant" living as a boarder in the home of Isaac Huffman in Prospect, Marion Co.

Henry Hain was the subject of a biography in a standard history of Marion Co. (The History of Marion County Ohio Containing a History of the County; its Townships, Towns, Churches, Schools, etc ... etc. Chicago: Leggett, Conaway & Co., 1883, p. 925) , which we excerpt here:

PIC_234-Eva-Hain-Wallis-cousin-Sarah-Evaline-daughter-of-Daniel-and-Belinda-Hain-sister-of-Marshall-Hain

Eva Hain Wallis [Sarrah Evaline Hain Wallis - b. 1845)
[Daughter of Prosperous Wagon Maker Daniel Hain and Wife Belinda]
[OF MARION, MARION CO., OH - AND LATER MARION CO., IL]
[Wife of Minister William Wallis of Illinois]

Uncredited and no place cited, but CDV was found in Marion, OH in association with other inscribed cards, including some of family members of this woman.

Old penciled inscription on the bottom front identifying the subject and another on the back giving very useful information about her: Eva Hain Wallis - cousin - Sarah Evaline - daughter of Daniel and Belinda Hain - sister of Marshall Hain.

Based on the information in the inscriptions and the other photos in association with this one, we were easily able to locate US Census records that tell quite a bit about this woman's family origins. The family name is also spelled "Haines" or "Hains" in records.

She was the daughter of prosperous PA-born wagon Maker, Daniel Hain and his OH-born wife Belinda. Her parents started their married life in Marion, Marion Co., OH. Apparently they moved to IL sometime between 1850 and 1860 (oddly enough living in a Marion Co. there also). Sara Evaline's father died sometime between 1860 and 1870 and her mother Belinda Hain returned to Marion OH for a time, before relocating again to IL sometime before 1880, where she lived out her life in a household with her sister, Mary Wilson.

Minerva Owens (Campbell) W. J.'s wife
Found with other photos from Marion County, Ohio, including others of relatives of the the subject pictured here.

Found census records that tell quite a bit this young woman and her husband.

In the 1870 Census they were living in Montgomery Twp., Marion Co. Husband Wm. J. Campbell was a "druggist," age 22, born in NY. Minerva was age 20, born in OH.

In the 1880 Census the couple was in La Rue, Marion Co., William J. was listed as an "apothecary," and they had one child, a 9-year-old daughter listed as "Bird," apparently a nickname, as subsequent census records for the daughter show that her name was Claudice Campbell. The couple had just the one child.

In the 1900 Census they were living alone in Marion Co. and their wedding year is indicated as 1868 - quite probably right around the time this CDV was made.

By the 1910 Census, Minerva was widowed and living with daughter Claudice Campbell Clifton and her husband Day D. Clifton, a banker, in Marion Co.

Earlier records for the Minerva Owens Campbell in this CDV show that she was the daughter of Hiram and Sarah ("Satira") Sprague Owens, of Montgomery Twp., Marion Co., OH. She had a younger brother William ("Chesney") Owens and a much younger half-sister Eulalia Augusta Owens (by her father's second wife Jane Carey Owens).

PIC_229-Henry-Hull

Henry Hull

Found several Census records clearly pertaining to this man Henry Hull in Marion Co. (and we found no other men of this name in the time period of this image). The 1900 record shows he was born in 1843. He married somewhat late in life in his early 30s (about 1875), and he and his wife Catherine had just one child recorded in Census records, a son William F. Based on his apparent age here, this CDV likely comes from the late 1860s.

Earlier records show that this Henry Hull's father was born in MD, lost his first wife and became a widower by 1860, but remarried to a widow named Esther Hain Freeman when Henry was a pre-teen or teen. Henry's step-mother brought a half-sister into the family, Levinia "Jennie" Freeman who married a man named Allan Jones and had a son named Lewis W. Jones.

1850 Census, OH, Marion Co., Pleasant Twp.: Henry Hull, age 6, son of farmer David (see Note) Hull, age 41, born in MD; and wife Catharine, age 31, born in PA; and siblings Elnora age 8, Fran(illegible) age 3, and Hester age 1/12.
Note: This record is hard to read and the name of Henry Hull's father was Daniel though it is indexed as David here, as subsequent records show.

1860 Census, OH, Marion Co., Pleasant Twp.: Henry Hull, age 15, "farmer," born in OH; son of farmer Daniel Hull, age 49, born in MD, apparently a widower (and see Note for the 1870 Census below) as no wife is shown; with siblings all born in OH - older sister Elnora age 17, younger brother Frances age 14, and younger sister Elizabeth age 9.

1870 Census, OH, Marion Co., Pleasant Twp., Waldo: Henry Hull, age 25, "farmer," born in OH; son of Daniel Hull, age 49 (see Note ), born in MD; with Esther Hull, age 44, born in PA; and William Hull, age 23, "carpenter"; Williams [sic] Hull, age 8; and Levinia J. Freeman, age 13, born in OH.
Note: The 1880 Census shows Daniel Hull at age 69, married to Esther age 55, with son William age 18, so his age in this census is almost certainly incorrectly noted. Also, records we researched for other photos found with this one show, as best we could determine, that the Esther Hull recorded here was Esther Hain Freeman, widowed sometime before 1860. The Freeman girl in this record was her daughter by her previous marriage who apparently kept her biological father's surname and later in life went by the nickname "Jennie," apparently referencing her middle initial/middle name.

1880 Census, OH, Marion Co., Waldo: Henry Hull, age 35, "laborer," born in OH; with wife Caroline, age 31, born in OH; and son William F., born in OH.

1900 Census, OH, Marion Co., Pleasant Twp.: Henry Hull, "farmer," age 56, born Aug 1843 OH; with wife Catherine, age 53, born April 1847 OH couple married 25 years; and son William, "laborer farm", age 23, born Oct 1876.

PIC_228-W.-H.-Sprague

W. H. Sprague

Found several US Census records that tell a bit of a story about this man William H. Sprague. He was a farmer married some 45 years. He and his wife Jane had three children, but only one survived into adulthood - a daughter Sarah, who became a school teacher. Couldn't find an 1870 record for him, but he appears in three Census records after that, until 1910. The records show that this man's parents were born in OH and his wife's in DE.

The 1900 Census shows he was born in 1840, and based on his apparent age here, the photo must date from the early to mid 1860s.

1880 Census - La Rue - Marion Co., OH: William H. Sprague, age 39, born in OH, "retired farmer"; wife Jane, age 33, born in OH; and daughters Nettie, age 12 - and Sarah, age 6.

1900 Census - Montgomery Twp., Marion Co., OH - William Sprague, age 59, born Oct. 1840 in OH, "day laborer"; with wife Jane, age 52, born June 1847 in OH, mother of 3 children, only 1 still living; couple married 36 years; and daughter Sarah Sprague, age 22, born Aug. 1877 in OH, "school teacher."

Annie Ball McCormick - died in Marion Ohio- buried in La Rue Cemetery - daug. of Sarah Sprague Ball.
[Daughter of Sarah Sprague Ball (b. c. 1838) and Sherman Ball (b. c. 1830)]
[Grand-Daughter of Widow Sarah Davis Sprague]

Were easily able to validate most of the inscription on the back of the card through Census Records. This girl Annie Ball McCormick (aka Mary Ann Ball Ball but she apparently went by "Ann" or "Annie") was born about 1863 and was the daughter of Sarah E. Sprague Ball, born about 1838. Her father was Sherman Ball, born about 1830. The fate of her father is unclear to us, as we could find him in only one Census , and thereafter Annie and her mother are shown living with Annie's grandmother and Aunt - Sarah Davis Sprague and Emily Sprague (we know from researching other photos found with one what the maiden name of this girl's grandmother was).

Other records show that this girl had three siblings, none of whom survived past the first few years of childhood (William, Wilbur T. (or Wilbert), and Emily C. Annie was the youngest, and she survived.

Wm. H. Sprague - Married Jane Clark

Found several US Census records that tell a bit of a story about this man William H. Sprague. He was a farmer married at least 45 years. He and his wife Jane had three children, but only one survived into adulthood - a daughter, Sarah, who became a school teacher. We couldn't find an 1870 record for them, but they appear in every Census after that, until 1910. The records show that his parents were born in OH and his wife's in DE.

Since the 1900 Census shows he was married 45 years, he likely got married right around the time the photo on this CDV was taken.

1880 Census - La Rue - Marion Co., OH: William H. Sprague, age 39, born in OH, "retired farmer"; wife Jane, age 33, born in OH; and daughters Nettie, age 12 - and Sarah, age 6.

1900 Census - Montgomery Twp., Marion Co., OH - William Sprague, age 59, born Oct. 1840 in OH, "day laborer"; with wife Jane, age 52, born June 1847 in OH, mother of 3 children, only 1 still living; couple married 36 years; and daughter Sarah Sprague, age 22, born Aug. 1877 in OH, "school teacher."

Hiram Owens

Found Census records for this man in Montgomery Twp., Marion Co., OH. It appears that his wife Sarah apparently died between 1860 and 1870 and that he remarried to a woman named Jane. Given the age gap between the children, it is pretty clear that Hiram's third child was with his second wife.

1860 Census - OH, Marion Co., Montgomery Twp., La Rue PO: Hiram Owens, age 38, born in DE, "farmer"; with wife Sarah Owens, age 33, born in OH; and children all born in OH - Minerva, age 9; and William, age 4; and with live-in domestic servant Selena Warner.

1870 Census - OH, Marion Co., Montgomery Twp., La Rue PO: Hiram Owens, age 48, born in DE, "farmer"; with wife Jane Owens, age 38; and children both born in OH - son William H., age 14, and daughter U. A., age 6; plus an 82-year-old woman Margaret, born in DE, presumably Hiram's mother.

By the 1880 Census, still in Montgomery Twp., Hiram no longer appears because Jane is "widowed," Margaret Owens is still in the household, now at the extraordinary age of 93, as are children William H. (or "A.") and daughter U. A., now listed as "Augusta.

Note: To assist those who may be interested in this photo for genealogy, other photos found with this one indicate that Hiram's first wife was Satira(?) "Sarah" Sprague, that their daughter Minerva married a Mr. Campbell, that their son William went by the nickname "Chesney"; and that Hiram's second wife was Jane Carey, half sister of Sarah Day, and that their daughter Augusta married a Mr. Osborn. We have not searched records to verify this information, but it appears on inscriptions on other photos.

William H. Sprague - Husband of Jane Clark Sprague
La Rue, Montgomery Township - Marion County, Ohio

Found three Census records that give some information about this man. He and his wife Catherine were a farm couple married over 40 years. They had three children, but only one survived into adulthood - a daughter, Sarah born about 1868, who became a school teacher. We couldn't find records before 1880, but we did find them thereafter until 1910. The records show that this William H. Sprague's parents were born in OH (and his wife's in DE).

Records also show that this William H. Sprague was born about 1841. Based on his apparent age here, this CDV likely dates from right around 1861 or just slightly later. In fact, at the time of this photo he was likely not yet married. He would have married at least by 1867 because daughter Sarah was born about 1868, and depending on the unknown age of the child who did not survive, possibly a couple of years earlier. But it is highly likely he was still single when this photo was taken and probably married sometime during or right after the Civil War.

She was one of four children of Adam and Mary Ann (Anna) Hain - all of them appearing in the 1860 Census.

1860 Census - OH, Marion Co., Pleasant: Adam Hain, age 46, born in PA, "farmer"; with wife Anna, age 45, born in VA; and son Samuel, age 21, "school teacher"; son Eli A., age 17, "domestic"; daughter Martha A., age 15, "domestic"; and daughter Mary E., age 7. Clearly this was a second wife for Adam Hain, given the name and age discrepancy and the age gap between children.

She married Daniel W. Huffman about 1863. The couple had four children, three of whom show in the 1880 Census. (We couldn't find record of the fourth, but the 1900 Census indicates she was mother of 4 children, 3 living). This Census also show Martha and Daniel Huffman living next store to his aging parents, Jonathan and Mary Huffman, both in their 60s.

His first wife died about 1860 leaving him with two young children (a daughter Minerva and a son William, who went by the nickname "Chesney"). Hiram Owens and the woman pictured here had a third child together, a daughter almost 10 years younger than her half-siblings. However, Hiram Owens himself died about 1875, leaving Jane Carey Owens to care for all three children - her two step-children and her daughter - plus Hiram's widowed mother, who lived into her 90s.

Clearly, thouigh the Jane Carey-Owens pictured was petite in stature, she had a huge responsibilities and judging by the records, she stood up to them.

Found Census records for the family of Hiram Owens in Montgomery Twp., Marion Co., OH.

Aunt Esther Hull (Hain Freeman) Jennie Freeman Fox - cousin - Levinia [Lavinia] Jane "Jennie" - married John Fox

Found a US Census record that validates the inscription on the back of this CDV and allows the slightly complicated family story of the two individuals in this picture to be reconstructed.

Esther Hull's maiden name was Hain. She was married to a man named Freeman and was widowed. Daniel Hull was also married and widowed (other records show his first wife was named Catherine). Both parties had children in their first marriages - Daniel had two sons and Esther had two daughters.

When Daniel and Esther married they apparently had a son together named William - and that explains the large age gap between William and the other of Daniel Hull's boys. At the time of the 1870 Census one of Esther's daughters from her first marriage was still a young girl and being raised with the Hull boys, But she kept her biological father's surname Freeman - and all this is clearly indiated in the 1870 Census.
