Sarah A. Verden - lived 74 years of age - died Feb. 11, 1879
Based on the useful information in the penciled inscription, I found Census records for this woman which show that she and her husband migrated into Ohio before 1832 and lived thereafter in Montgomery Twp., Marion Co.
1870 Census - Montgomery Twp, Marion Co., OH: Sarah Verden, age 65, born in KY; wife of W. J. Verden, age 65, born in DE, "farmer"; and son J. B., age 26, born in OH, "farmer"; with a female Jennie Lane, age 18, born in OH, "school teacher" also living in the household.
1880 Census - Montgomery Twp., Marion Co., OH: This woman must indeed have passed over in 1879 as the inscription states because the 1880 Census shows her husband William J. Virden (spelled with an "i") at age 75, living alone (single) as a "retired farmer". The records before and after his in this Census are for his sons Henry M. Virden and James B. Virden, both mature men with families, and both farmers.
Earlier records for 1860 and 1850 - also in Montgomery Twp. - show that this couple had four children - Henry M, Anne E, Sarah E, and James B. An 1840 record shows a William Virden almost certain Sarah's husband, as head of a family in Montgomery Twp.
Also, the oldest son was born about 1832 in OH, so this woman and her husband must have migrated into OH before 1832, making them fairly early settlers in the area.
