Aunt Esther Hull (Hain Freeman) Jennie Freeman Fox - cousin - Levinia [Lavinia] Jane "Jennie" - married John Fox
Found a US Census record that validates the inscription on the back of this CDV and allows the slightly complicated family story of the two individuals in this picture to be reconstructed.
Esther Hull's maiden name was Hain. She was married to a man named Freeman and was widowed. Daniel Hull was also married and widowed (other records show his first wife was named Catherine). Both parties had children in their first marriages - Daniel had two sons and Esther had two daughters.
When Daniel and Esther married they apparently had a son together named William - and that explains the large age gap between William and the other of Daniel Hull's boys. At the time of the 1870 Census one of Esther's daughters from her first marriage was still a young girl and being raised with the Hull boys, But she kept her biological father's surname Freeman - and all this is clearly indiated in the 1870 Census.
1870 Census - OH, Marion Co., Pleasant Twp.: Daniel Hull, "farmer," age 49, born in MD (he is shown as 10 years older in all other Census records); with wife Esther Hull, age 44, born in PA; with sons Henry 25 "farmer," Frances 23 "carpenter," and William 8; and with another child in the household, Levinia (Lavinia?) J. Freeman, age 13.
From this record, we can deduce that Daniel and Esther joined their families together some time between the birth of Levinia J. "Jennie" Freeman and William Hull - or about 1857-1862. In checking this, we found an 1860 Census record showing Esther Freeman as head of a household and presumably widowed by that time, so she and Daniel must have married about 1860-62.
1860 Census - OH - Marion Co., Pleasant Twp.: Esther Freeman, age 32, born in PA; with children Elnora E., age 9; and Lavinia J, age 3.
We also found a Census record that validates Lavinia Jane "Jennie's" marriage to John Fox indicated in the inscription on this CDV. The record shows that the couple lived adjacent to Daniel and Esther Hull. Lavinia J. was going by "Jennie" L. by this time, and she and her John Fox had a baby daughter.
