Henry Hull
Found several Census records clearly pertaining to this man Henry Hull in Marion Co. (and we found no other men of this name in the time period of this image). The 1900 record shows he was born in 1843. He married somewhat late in life in his early 30s (about 1875), and he and his wife Catherine had just one child recorded in Census records, a son William F. Based on his apparent age here, this CDV likely comes from the late 1860s.
Earlier records show that this Henry Hull's father was born in MD, lost his first wife and became a widower by 1860, but remarried to a widow named Esther Hain Freeman when Henry was a pre-teen or teen. Henry's step-mother brought a half-sister into the family, Levinia "Jennie" Freeman who married a man named Allan Jones and had a son named Lewis W. Jones.
- 1850 Census, OH, Marion Co., Pleasant Twp.: Henry Hull, age 6, son of farmer David (see Note) Hull, age 41, born in MD; and wife Catharine, age 31, born in PA; and siblings Elnora age 8, Fran(illegible) age 3, and Hester age 1/12.
Note: This record is hard to read and the name of Henry Hull's father was Daniel though it is indexed as David here, as subsequent records show. - 1860 Census, OH, Marion Co., Pleasant Twp.: Henry Hull, age 15, "farmer," born in OH; son of farmer Daniel Hull, age 49, born in MD, apparently a widower (and see Note for the 1870 Census below) as no wife is shown; with siblings all born in OH - older sister Elnora age 17, younger brother Frances age 14, and younger sister Elizabeth age 9.
- 1870 Census, OH, Marion Co., Pleasant Twp., Waldo: Henry Hull, age 25, "farmer," born in OH; son of Daniel Hull, age 49 (see Note ), born in MD; with Esther Hull, age 44, born in PA; and William Hull, age 23, "carpenter"; Williams [sic] Hull, age 8; and Levinia J. Freeman, age 13, born in OH.
Note: The 1880 Census shows Daniel Hull at age 69, married to Esther age 55, with son William age 18, so his age in this census is almost certainly incorrectly noted. Also, records we researched for other photos found with this one show, as best we could determine, that the Esther Hull recorded here was Esther Hain Freeman, widowed sometime before 1860. The Freeman girl in this record was her daughter by her previous marriage who apparently kept her biological father's surname and later in life went by the nickname "Jennie," apparently referencing her middle initial/middle name. - 1880 Census, OH, Marion Co., Waldo: Henry Hull, age 35, "laborer," born in OH; with wife Caroline, age 31, born in OH; and son William F., born in OH.
- 1900 Census, OH, Marion Co., Pleasant Twp.: Henry Hull, "farmer," age 56, born Aug 1843 OH; with wife Catherine, age 53, born April 1847 OH couple married 25 years; and son William, "laborer farm", age 23, born Oct 1876.
