Claudice Campbell Clifton - Minerva's daughter
Easily found US Census records that confirm the inscription on the back of this CDV and also tell a bit about the life of the subject, Claudice Campbell Clifton. She was the only child of a druggist and his wife - William J. and Minerva Campbell - and she and her husband Day D. Clifton, a banker, had a childless marriage but adopted a daughter named Marie.
As Claudice Campbell Clifton was apparently born about 1872 and appears to be about 8 years old in the photo, this CDV likely dates from right around 1880.
1910 Census - Ohio, Marion Co., Montgomery: Claudice Clifton, age 38, born in Ohio; and wife of Day D. Clifton, age 38, born in OH, employed at "Bank"; couple married 10 years with no children of their own; plus "adopted daughter" Marie, age 6; and mother-in-law Minerva Campbell, age 58, widowed; with house servant Elma Kramer also in residence.
Regarding Claudice's parents and early life:
The 1870 Census record for Claudice's mother Minerva, age 20, born in OH - shows that she was the new bride of Wm. J. Campbell, "druggist", age 22, born in NY and living in Ohio, Marion Co., Montgomery Twp. Claudice was not yet born.
The 1880 Census shows the couple in La Rue, Marion Co., where William J. is listed as an "apothecary," and Claudice shows in the Census as a 9-year-old girl named "Bird" - apparently a nickname. No other children are listed.
The 1900 Census shows William J. and Minerva living alone in, so Minerva must have been widowed between then and the 1910 Census above, where she is living in the home of her daughter Claudice and husband.
Also, other photos found with this one indicate that this little girl's mother's maiden name was Minerva Owens, and she was the daughter of Hiram and Sarah Owens, of Montgomery Twp., Marion Co., OH. Census records clearly support this.
