Mrs. Hiram Owens & Chesney
Census records and other photos found with this one make clear that the woman pictured was Sarah "Satira" Sprague Owens, the first wife of Hiram Owens - and her young son William H. (or A.) Owens, who went by the nickname "Chesney." This woman died not long this photo was taken (probably very shortly after, and her husband Hiram Owens remarried to a woman named Jane Carey Owens, who was step mother to the boy pictured here and with whom Hiram Owens had another child - a half sister to William "Chesney" - who went by Augusta. Plus William "Chesney" had an older sister Minerva too. Chesney appears to be perhaps 3 years old here, so the CDV dates from about 1860 based on his age in Census records.
easily found Census records for the family in Montgomery Twp., Marion Co., OH. The woman in this image appears only in the 1860 Census. Thereafter, Hiram's second wife appears. Hiram himself died sometime between 1870 and 1880, so the second wife raised her step-children and her own daughter.
1860 Census - OH, Marion Co., Montgomery Twp., La Rue PO: Hiram Owens, age 38, born in DE, "farmer"; with wife Sarah Owens, age 33, born in OH; and children all born in OH - Minerva, age 9; and William, age 4; and with live-in domestic servant Selena Warner.
1870 Census - OH, Marion Co., Montgomery Twp., La Rue PO: Hiram Owens, age 48, born in DE, "farmer"; with wife Jane Owens, age 38; and children both born in OH - son William H., age 14, and daughter U. A., age 6; plus an 82-year-old woman Margaret, born in DE, presumably Hiram's mother.
By the 1880 Census, still in Montgomery Twp., Hiram no longer appears because Jane is "widowed," Margaret Owens is still in the household, now at the extraordinary age of 93, as are children William H. (or "A.") and daughter U. A., now listed as "Augusta."
Note: To assist those who may be interested in this photo for genealogy, other photos found with this one indicate that Hiram's first wife was Satira(?) "Sarah" Sprague, that their daughter Minerva married a Mr. Campbell, that their son William went by the nickname "Chesney"; and that Hiram's second wife was Jane Carey, half sister of Sarah Day, and that their daughter U. ("Ulalia" or "Eulalia") Augusta married a Mr. Osborn. I have not searched additional records to verify all this information, but it appears on inscriptions on other photos - and it is definitely verified by the Census records I did access and have presented above plus others I accessed in research on other photos found with this one.
