Jane Carey-Owens, Half Sister of Sarah Day, Mother of Augusta Osborne, Step mother of W. Chesney Owens, and Mrs. Campbell, mother of Augusta Osborne

Census records and other photos found with this one make clear that the Jane Carey-Owens pictured was the second wife of  Hiram Owens of Montgomery Twp., Marion Co., OH. His first wife died about 1860 leaving him with two young children (a daughter Minerva and a son William, who went by the nickname "Chesney"). Hiram Owens and the woman pictured here had a third child together, a daughter almost 10 years younger than her half-siblings. However, Hiram Owens himself died about 1875, leaving Jane Carey Owens to care for all three children - her two step-children and her daughter - plus Hiram's widowed mother, who lived into her 90s.

Clearly, thouigh the Jane Carey-Owens pictured was petite in stature, she had a huge responsibilities and judging by the records, she stood up to them.

Found Census records for the family of Hiram Owens in Montgomery Twp., Marion Co., OH. The 1860 Census lists his first wife, Sarah (aka Satira Sprague) Owens. The woman in this image Jane Carey Owens appears in the subsequent records.

  • 1860 Census - OH, Marion Co., Montgomery Twp., La Rue PO: Hiram Owens, age 38, born in DE, "farmer"; with wife Sarah Owens, age 33, born in OH; and children all born in OH - Minerva, age 9; and William, age 4; and with live-in domestic servant Selena Warner.
  • 1870 Census - OH, Marion Co., Montgomery Twp., La Rue PO: Hiram Owens, age 48, born in DE, "farmer"; with wife Jane Owens, age 38; and children both born in OH - son William H., age 14, and daughter U. A., age 6; plus an 82-year-old woman Margaret, born in DE, presumably Hiram's mother.
  • By the 1880 Census, still in Montgomery Twp., Hiram no longer appears because Jane is "widowed," Margaret Owens is still in the household, now at the extraordinary age of  93, as are children William H.  (or "A.") and daughter U. A., now  listed as "Augusta."

Note: Census records show that the oldest Owens daughter Minerva married a druggist (apothecary) W. J. Campbell and had a daughter Claudice - they lived in Montgomery Twp., Marion Co. Other records show that U. A. Owens aka Eulalia Augusta Owens married a man named James H.  Oborn (not Osborn as the inscription states), a retail merchant who had a feed store.
