Freeman Cousin - Lavinia Jane “Jennie" Freeman - Ester Hain Freeman (Hull) daughter

  • The CDV was found in Marion, Ohio along with others pertaining to this family. The subject grew up in and lived in Pleasant Twp., Marion Co. The photo was taken in Kenton for reasons unknown (perhaps she was visiting).

Found Census records that tell quite a bit about this individual. Her mother Esther Hain Freeman was the widow of a man named Freeman with whom she had this daughter and another daughter Elnora Freeman. She remarried to a man named Daniel Hull in Pleasant Twp. who was a widower with sons from his first marriage. Daniel and Esther had a son together, and the subject of this photo was raised with the Hull boys but went by her biological father's name, as Lavinia J. or "Jennie" Freeman.

The 1860 record below shows Lavinia J. "Jennie" living with her sister and widowed mother.

1860 Census - OH - Marion Co., Pleasant Twp.: Esther Freeman, age 32, born in PA; with children Elnora E., age 9; and Lavinia J, age 3.

The 1870 record below shows "Jennie" growing up with her re-married mother in the home of Daniel Hull.

1870 Census - OH, Marion Co., Pleasant Twp.: Daniel Hull, "farmer," age 49, born in MD (he is shown as 10 years older in all other Census records); with wife Esther Hull, age 44, born in PA; with sons Henry 25 "farmer," Frances 23 "carpenter," and William 8; and with another child in the household, Levinia (Lavinia?) J. Freeman, age 13.

From research into other Freeman photos we know that this Lavinia J. "Jennie" Freeman married a man named John Fox and continued life with him in Pleasant Twp., Marion Co. The 1880 record below shows her early in her marriage. In this record she is listed as "Jennie" L., just as she is named on this CDV.

1880 Census - OH - Marion Co., Pleasant Twp: John W. Fox, "farmer," age 26, born in OH of immigrant parents from Baden; with wife Jennie L.; age 23; and daughter Ollie E., age 1.
