Chris Campbell - son of Wm. Campbell and Caroline Ellis Campbell - younger brother of John & Wm. Campbell
Found US Census records for this boy's family, all in Marion Co., Ohio that give a sketch of his circumstances. His mother was about 10 years younger than his father (though her age varies a bit in the Census listings). She she married quite young, had her first children while still in her teens, and was widowed sometime before 1880. The child depicted here was born quite some time after his two older brothers - almost half a generation later.
1860 Census - OH, Marion Co., Grand Twp.: William Campbell, age 40, "farmer," born in Ireland; with wife Caroline, age 31, born in NY; and sons John, age 16, and William, age 14.
1870 Census - OH, Marion Co, Montgomery Twp., La Rue: William Campbell, age 52, "farmer," born in Ireland; with wife Caroline, age 40, born in NY; and son Christopher, age 6, born in OH.
1880 Census - OH, Marion Co., Marion: Caroline Campbell, age 50, born in NY, widow; with son Christopher, age 15.
1900 Census - OH, Marion Co., Marion, Ward 4: Caroline Campbell, widowed, living alone, age 72, born in Ireland September 1827, immigrated to the USA 1828; mother of 3 children, 2 still living.
Note: In the 1900 record we learn that Christopher's mother was actually born in Ireland, not NY, but immigrated to the USA as an infant. However, she must have lived in NY long enough to have lasting connections there because other photos found with this one suggest there were Ellis relatives in NY during the mid 1800s, including two boys roughly contemporary with Christopher Campbell named Robert Ellis and Christopher Ellis and a young woman named Sarah Jane Ellis perhaps born around 1850-1855. And in fact one photo of Christopher Campbell was taken in NYC, presumably on a visit there. We couldn't identify these Ellis individuals through Census or other records , but we offer this information in the event that it may prove useful to somebody doing genealogy for these Ellis and Campbell family lines.
