Eva Hain Wallis [Sarrah Evaline Hain Wallis - b. 1845)
[Daughter of Prosperous Wagon Maker Daniel Hain and Wife Belinda]
[OF MARION, MARION CO., OH - AND LATER MARION CO., IL]
[Wife of Minister William Wallis of Illinois]
Uncredited and no place cited, but CDV was found in Marion, OH in association with other inscribed cards, including some of family members of this woman.
Old penciled inscription on the bottom front identifying the subject and another on the back giving very useful information about her: Eva Hain Wallis - cousin - Sarah Evaline - daughter of Daniel and Belinda Hain - sister of Marshall Hain.
Based on the information in the inscriptions and the other photos in association with this one, we were easily able to locate US Census records that tell quite a bit about this woman's family origins. The family name is also spelled "Haines" or "Hains" in records.
She was the daughter of prosperous PA-born wagon Maker, Daniel Hain and his OH-born wife Belinda. Her parents started their married life in Marion, Marion Co., OH. Apparently they moved to IL sometime between 1850 and 1860 (oddly enough living in a Marion Co. there also). Sara Evaline's father died sometime between 1860 and 1870 and her mother Belinda Hain returned to Marion OH for a time, before relocating again to IL sometime before 1880, where she lived out her life in a household with her sister, Mary Wilson.
The woman pictured here was born about 1845 while her father was working with two other wagon makers, William E. Bowen and Waterman Higgins. Marshall had a younger brother Marshall W. Hain. There were just the two children in his family. Her father moved with his family about the time this CDV was taken to Marion Co., IL. After 1860 we could not track him in the Census - even though we tried every imaginable variant spelling of the last name. His widowed wife lived first with her sister, and then in the household of the daughter depicted on this CDV:
Here are the records pertaining to Sarrah Evaline (Eva) Hain and her parents, beginning she was was age 5 in the 1850 Census.
- 1850 Census - Marion - Marion Co., OH: Daniel Hains, age 33, born in PA, "Waggon [sic] Maker"; with wife Belinda, age 27, born in OH; and children both born in OH Sarrah E, age 5; and Marshall W., age 3. And with two other wagon makers in the household: Waterman Higgins, age 26, born in OH; and William E. Bowen, age 21, born in VA.
- 1860 Census - Township 2, Range 2, Marion Co., IL: Daniel Haines, age 44, born in PA, "Wagon Maker"; with wife Belinda, age 37, born in OH; and children Evaline, age 15 (clearly the "Sarrah E." from the 1850 Census but now going by her middle name); Marshall W., age 13; and three other individuals: Augusta Gooding, age 5; Frances Gooding, age 3; and Mary Wilson, age 35 (shown as a "sister" of Belinda Hain in the 1880 Census).
- 1870 Census - Marion - Marion Co., OH: Belinda Hain, age 47, born in OH; with Kate Hain, age 13; and Mary Wilson, age 45 (shown as a "sister" in the 1880 Census).
- 1880 Census - Salem- Marion Co., IL: Belinda Hain, age 55, born in OH; with Mary Wilson, age 60, sister.
She married an Irish-born clergyman William Wallis sometime shortly before 1870. By 1880 they had established a family. By 1900 she was going by "Eva H." Wallis (that is, Eva Hain Wallis, as in the inscription on this CDV).
- 1880 Census - Centralia - Marion Co., IL: William W. Wallis, "minister," age 44, born in Ireland; with wife Sarah E, age 35, born in OH; and children William 9, Mary 7, Marshall 1, Robert 5 mos; and a sister-in-law also living in the household, Katie Murphy, age 23.
- 1900 Census - Effingham - Effingham Co., IL: William Wallis, born June 1836 Ireland, age 63, immigrated in 1840, "minister"; with wife Eva, born Feb. 1845 in OH, mother of 5 children; with children both born in IL Mary age 27, and Edward, age 17, born in IL still in the household; and servant Katie M. Hain, born in NY; and mother-in-law Malinda (that is Belinda) Hain, born Feb 1823, age 77.
Based on all the evidence, we believe this photo was taken in the late 1860s around the time of Eva Hain Wallis's marriage - and likely taken in Illinois. Other records we access indicate that William Wallice was a Methodist minister.
