Adam Hain And 2nd Wife Ann Forsha Hain
These individuals were married a long time, but this was Adam Hain's second marriage - see the reference material below from five US Census records - 1840 to 1880 - and other sources.
This couple was married over 25 years, and Census records show they lived most of their life together in Pleasant Twp., just outside of Marion, OH - the county seat of Marion Co., OH. Adam Hain was born in PA about 1814 and Ann Hain in VA about 1815 and had a first marriage at least by 1838: his oldest son Samuel was born in OH about 1838, and he had a second son, Eli A. and a daughter Martha A. with his first wife. But sometime after his first wife's death in 1850 and the 1860 Census he remarried to the woman pictured in this CDV, and together they had a daughter Mary E. Though they didn't marry until middle age, they nonetheless had a long life together, both appearing in the 1880s Census.
Adam Hain was a farmer, who seemed to do very well for himself and his family, based on the statement of his assets in the US Census.
Ann Hain Census records indicate she was in ill health.
1840 Census - OH, Marion Co., Pleasant: Adam Hain, age 20-29, head of a household of 7 individuals (possibly heading up his birth family).
1850 Census - OH, Marion Co., Richland: Adam Hain, age 35, born in PA, "farmer"; with wife Mary Ann, age 31, born in VA; living with Comfort Ebbert, age 62, born in OH; and son Samuel, age 12 - born in OH. (The second and third children in this family, Eli A. and Martha A. do not appear in this Census, though they would have been ages 7 and 5, respectively.)
1860 Census - OH, Marion Co., Pleasant: Adam Hain, age 46, born in PA, "farmer"; with wife Anna, age 45, born in VA; and son Samuel, age 21, "school teacher"; son Eli A., age 17, "domestic"; daughter Martha A., age 15, 'domestic"; and daugfhter Mary E., age 7. Clearly this was a second wife for Adam Hain, given the name and age discrepancy and the age gap between children.
1870 Census - OH, Marion Co., Pleasant: Adam Hain, age 56, born in PA, "farmer", with $8,000 in assets (more than most of his neighbors); with wife Ann, age 55, born in VA; and daughter Mary E., age 17. Note: The Hains were living adjacent to their son Samuel and his young family.
1880 Census - OH, Marion Co., Pleasant: Adam Hain, age 66, born in PA, "farmer"; with wife Anna F., age 65, born in VA, afflicted with "dropsy"; and Amanda Bach, age 18, "servant."
So that much is evident from Census records. Also, Adam Hain was the subject of a biography in a standard history of Marion County, which we excerpt below (The History of Marion County Ohio Containing a History of the County; its Townships, Towns, Churches, Schools, etc ... etc. Chicago: Leggett, Conaway & Co., 1883, p. 880).
This material provides the information that Adam Hain's son by his first wife, Eli A. (Albert) Hain was a Civil War casualty - he was killed at Gettysburg July 3, 1863, after nine month's service.
ADAM HAIN is one of the substantial men of Pleasant Township. He was born February 11, 1814, in Perry County, Penn.. the son of Daniel and Elizabeth (Young) Hain. He obtained his education in the cabin schoolhouse, going only five days in Ohio, to which State he emigrated in 1830. At the age of twenty-one, he left home, and worked by day and job for nearly three years. In 1840, he commenced buying where he now resides, having today 158 acres, valued at $75 per acre. It is in good repair. The present barn was built in 1856, for $500, and his comfortable home in 1858, costing $2,000. Our subject has cleared in his time sixty acres of forest land. November 30, 1837, he married Mary Ann Ebert, daughter of Samuel and Comfort (Wonn) Ebert. This union was blessed with four children— Samuel E. ; Adeline, wife of Samuel Snyder; Eli A., who was killed at Gettysburg July 3, 1863, after nine months' service, and Martha A., wife of Daniel Huffman. His wife died in 1851, at the age of thirty-two. Our subject then married Ann Forsha, daughter of Anthony and Martha Forsha. Their one daughter, Mary E., is the wife of H. De La Grange. Mr. H. served as Trustee, Clerk and Assessor of his township. The family are members of the United Brethren Church, he being an official member.
